How to get your hair summer ready

The good news is that I have been incredibly busy, and despite the soggy economy (and weather), business is booming. The bad news is, I have been short on time, so keeping everybody updated on all of our new favorite things has been a challenge. But, I am here to share with you some of our recent hair discoveries and revelations. My current obsession is getting hair "Summer- Ready" so your hair can shine in the sun with all of its glory. Here are a few summer essentials from the stylists at acacia hair boutique.

essential 1.
Conditioner! I know you hear it over and over again, but conditioner is the key to getting your hair summer ready and keeping it summer fabulous. I recommend getting a good in-salon deep conditioning treatment with your pre-summer haircut, and taking home a once a week moisture mask as well as, a good but light daily leave-in.

We are currently crazy about Kevin Murphy's Born Again Treatment, or Milkshake Milk Mask as in salon repair treatments. Both treatments will help to re-balance the moisture and protein in your hair leaving it stronger, shinier and overall better looking. We also love Milkshake Active Yogurt Mask for a take home moisture mask, and Whipped Cream by Milkshake as a daily leave-in. This leave-in conditioner will change your life! It is incredibly light yet extremely moisturizing and smells like nothing you have ever had in your hair!

*Book a haircut in the month of June with Brent, Jenna, Sabrina or Hillary and receive a complimentary Conditioning treatment with your Hair Cut.

essential 2.
Smoothing Treatment! Now I am sure everyone felt as burned as we did in the wake of the smoothing treatment scandal, but at the end of the day, the treatments were amazing, and most of us genuinely feel that our hair will never be as good as it is with the help of these treatments. The bad news is several of these companies are no longer approved for use in Canada because of certain undesirable active ingredients. The good news is that KeraStraight is made in the UK and has been approved for use in Canada...and is by far the best of these treatments that I have used. This treatment is not only smoothing but also repairative and will leave your hair manageable and frizz free. the perfect combination for those "at the beach" and "on the go" summer days.

*Book a KeraStraight Smoothing Treatment with any of our stylists this summer and take home the support products (KeraStraight Straight Maintain Shampoo & Conditioner) on us.

essential 3.
Summer Glow! Its time to say good bye to the Monochromatic deep chocolate, copper and nutmeg tresses that have been gracing the pages of the magazines for the past few years. Sure we all loved the glamour and depth, as well as the easy to maintain look that it provided but subtle sun kissed locks can provide the same kind of benefits for your hair.

Ask your colorist for a few lighter pieces to accent your summer ready haircut and enhance your already amazing color.

*Book an appointment to summer-ready your color with our master color technician Cindy this summer and receive 20% off of your color service.

essential 4.
Better your Blonde! For those of you who love your blonde hair, brighten it up this summer with a pre-color deep cleansing treatment to gently exfoliate and buff away environmental buildup that shows over time on those beautiful blondes making them look dull or brassy. Also, try adding a few contrast pieces, to help boost the look of your blonde.

*Ask for Sasha, our resident Blonde expert and receive 20% off your blonde boosting appointment

Our Favorite New Products

As seasoned and inspired stylists, the team at acacia are always on the lookout for the next great product that we can be obsessed with, and in turn share with our clients! Currently, and this is rare...we have many....possibly too many to cover on one post. So I will be breaking it down by brand over the next few weeks.

Fresh Hair, Powder Puff
by
Kevin Murphy

Kevin Murphy products are the first line that I brought into the salon. I chose this line because of the unequivocal quality and attention to detail that this line offers. We love all of the products for many reasons, but our new obsessions are Fresh Hair, & Powder Puff.

Fresh Hair is bar none the BEST dry shampoo on the planet. It has an amazingly addictive tangerine creamsicle kind of aroma, and goes on virtually weightless. It is in an aerosol applicator, so it is easy to apply, and works like a charm. It removes the oil sheen from days old hair, and it neutralizes the smells that your hair picks up from the atmosphere. If I had to recommend one product this season, it would be this. Its perfect to freshen up your hair between outings, especially in this busy season.

Powder Puff is like back combing in an adorable little bottle! Easy to apply, and with great results, this product will soon be among your top 5 favorite styling products. Its applied to clean, dry hair as one of the final styling steps. You simply part the hair where you would like to amplify and tap or shake the bottle like you would a salt or pepper shaker. Then use your hands to work into the scalp with a massaging motion, and expect instant amplification of the area, with great texture and hold. Finish with spray! Its back combing made easy!

Two essentials for Holiday ready hair!

Stay tuned to hear all about our new favorite color line (that includes an ammonia free variety!) As well as what some people have been referring to as "hair crack"...its THAT addictive!

Brazilian Blow Out Scandal

So I am sure that by now most of you have heard the controversy concerning the Brazilian Blow out, and no doubt some of you are concerned because you or someone you know has gotten on in the recent months. I have done a great deal of research about what is going on and have uncovered a lot of helpful info from the inside. Hopefully this will alleviate some of your concerns and give you some info to pass along.

According to the information I have gathered, the cause for concern is the toxins that come from the vapor that is released from the hair during the blowdry and flat iron steps of the treatment. The main concern is for the people performing the treatment, as we inhale it directly and are exposed to larger amounts of it over a prolonged period of time. The toxin in question comes from formaldehyde...and the argument is A). How much is safe and B). How much is present in the Brazilian Blowout Solution. ...especially since the results from testing done on the solution seem to be inconsistent, but do confirm the presence of an unsafe amount of formaldehyde, despite the fact that Brazilian Blowout (the Company) maintain that their formula is Formaldehyde free.

http://www.lemondrop.com/2010/10/04/brazilian-blowout-formaldehyde/

Brazilian Blow out is a brand name company who has the most popular smoothing system on the markeet. It is not the treatment itself that is being deemed unsafe...but specifically the solution tthat is produced by Brazilian Blowout.

So, here is the deal... Brazilian Blowout originally purchased its product (solution) from a company in Brazil called Cadiveu. Cadiveu took a very popular smoothing system concept and created a formula that was safe and toxin free, but produced superior results. They sold this solution, to many different companies, operating under many different names, including Brazilian Blowout. Once the popularity of this treatment gained major headway, Brazilan Blowout decided to stop purchasing its product from Cadiveu and began producing the solution on its own. Apparently this is where the problems began as they did not manage to replicate the formula exactly and the new solution has more formaldehyde in it than the original. This is why the test result are inconsistent, and why it was able to pass the safety standards test given by health Canada but is now under question.

I am sure that eventually all of this will blow over, but I for one am not willing to risk the health and well being of my staff and clients, so we have recently switched over to Cadiveu as it is the founder of the product and prides itself in quality control. The solution has also passed the tests administered by health Canada. I look forward to continuing to offer my clients the benifits of this unique and ground breaking treatment.

Hopefully this answered any questions and alleviate any concers that anyone might have

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

I have been doing hair for almost 2 decades and for the first time in as many years, I am so amped about the next big thing in hair.....The Brazilian Blow Out....OMG...this thing is AMAZING. acacia hair boutique is so excited to announce that we are now offering the Brazilian Blow Out.

Two, of my staff accompanied me to Seattle on Monday to attend a certification seminar on the Brazilian Blowout smoothing system, and although the seminar did a thoroughly good job of getting us excited,(and of being convincing enough to get me to part with a substantial amount of money) I was, as always, somewhat sceptical of what these peddlers were peddling. and its not that I did not believe in what they were saying, its just that everyone always promises liquid gold in a bottle...and hype goes a long way.

So, long story short, (too late- I know) we got the stuff... brought it across the border, and tried it on the "worst case scenario" we could think of... so, let me introduce you to Cindy, our color technician; recently color corrected (with bleach no less) naturally very curly, very damaged, very broken, horse-like textured, frizzy, wiggy hair. Hair that needs to have -no word of a lie- Vaseline applied to it to try to make it shine. Cindy uses a flat iron, on full heat, several times a day to control the frizz and pouf. She also fights with trying to manage it and I fight to give it any semblance of movement, while keeping it smooth, when I style it. I usually have to use maximum tension, and A GREAT DEAL of product, followed by a very thorough flat ironing, which she always touches up afterwards.

Skip to this afternoon, when directly after ANOTHER color service, we did the Brazilian Blow Out Smoothing Treatment on her hair and holy S**t.... 90 minutes later, not only did we not have to use product to blow it out, we didn't have to use a flat iron....my jaw literally dropped.

Her response: "my hair hasn't felt like this since I was four". She did maintain a lot of curl, but her frizz and pouf were literally gone, and the blow dry was a cinch. I am so excited to share this with everyone....I cant wait for my next experience with it!!! stay tuned
